A simple one-day guide to Tartu, including breakfast spots, museums, restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and where to stay in the city centre.
If you only have one day in Tartu, you can still experience a great deal. Estonia’s second-largest city is compact, walkable, and full of character. One day is enough for good coffee, culture, excellent food, shopping, and a relaxed evening in the city centre.
Here is a simple 24-hour Tartu itinerary, with the main stops all within easy reach of tARTu Stays apartments on Ülikooli Street.
Morning: breakfast and a walk on Toomemägi
Start your day with breakfast at Kohvik Toome, a cosy café near Toomemägi. It is a lovely place for a slow morning coffee before you begin exploring the city.
After breakfast, head to the University of Tartu Museum. It is one of the best places to understand the city’s academic and cultural identity. After your visit, take a short walk around Toomemägi, where you can see the ruins of Tartu Cathedral, the famous bridges, and some of the best views over the city.
Late morning: coffee in the centre
For a second coffee stop, visit Werner Café, one of Tartu’s classic cafés. It is right in the centre and very close to tARTu Stays, which makes it an easy and natural stop during the day.
Lunch: local flavours in central Tartu
For lunch, we recommend Pompei, a reliable and popular choice in central Tartu. As a second option, try Kampus, which is also a good choice if you want something lively and central.
If you are in the mood for Italian food, La Dolce Vita is one of the best-known restaurants in Tartu and is run by Italians. If you want a good Japanese-style chain food option, Tokumaru in Tartu Kaubamaja is a practical choice. It is especially convenient if you would also like to do some shopping at Kaubamaja.
One of the advantages of Tartu is how easy everything feels. You do not need long taxi rides or complicated planning. Most places in the centre are within walking distance.
Afternoon: art, old town, and small discoveries
Spend your afternoon at the Tartu Art Museum in the famous Leaning House, one of the city’s best-known landmarks, then continue with a relaxed walk through the Old Town. Streets like Rüütli, Jaani, and Küüni are perfect for discovering galleries, small shops, and the everyday rhythm of the city.
If you enjoy shopping, this is also a good time to stop by Tartu Kaubamaja and browse local and international brands before continuing your walk.
Evening: dinner and culture
In the evening, choose between a longer dinner, a theatre visit, or a relaxed night out in the city centre. Depending on your mood, you can head to the Vanemuine Theatre, a concert venue, or a local bar. Tartu has enough nightlife to stay interesting, while still keeping its comfortable small-city feel.
Night: stay in the heart of Tartu
After a full day, it makes a real difference to stay in the city centre. At tARTu Stays, you are close to cafés, museums, restaurants, and nightlife, so you can explore the city on foot and return easily at the end of the evening.
Why guests choose tARTu Stays:
- central location on Ülikooli Street
- self check-in 24/7
- fast Wi-Fi
- apartments designed in collaboration with local artists
The apartments are not just a place to sleep. They are part of the Tartu experience, combining comfort, design, and a distinctly local atmosphere.
The next morning
If you have a little more time before leaving, enjoy breakfast at Pierre in the Old Town or prepare something simple in your apartment kitchen before check-out.
